Have you "jumped the shark" with your career?
"Jumping The Shark"
Have you ever heard of that term?
It means, in essence... running on fumes
and "over staying your welcome..."
It came about on television, primarily
from the show the "Happy Days."
On one episode Fonzi was watering skiing
and he is so cool... (in his leather jacket)
he actually “jumped over a shark", to the thrilling
applause of on-lookers on the beach.
The critic said, "You know you are running
out of story ideas and are on life support
when all you can come up with- is Fonzi
some how "jumping over a shark.'"
The term stuck for years... and became
a main stay cliché of critics.
And you know what? He was right! The show
ended there after... there really wasn't any
reason to continue.
Now, to give an example from my "old life."
I was an actor in Hollywood... successfully
grinding out a career.
I was auditioning for a commercial. Next
to me reading the sides (the script) is
a dwarf actor. A little person and a nice guy.
I ask him what role he is reading for. He says, "
The husband." I say, "I am reading for the husband."
He says, "Well, I guess we're up for the same
role... good luck."
I sat there amazed and dazed...and thinking
"Why am I wasting my time here...?
What is going on when these casting
people DON'T KNOW what they want...?"
I go up and admonish my agent in her
office on why she sent me out on this audition.
She says, "Honey, it's one of those auditions where
they are keeping their options open...
But they did want to see you, didn't they?"
I reply, "Options? They aren't sure
if they want a 5'9" comedian or 3'6" little person?
They are on the fence THAT much?"
That was it! That was "my" jumping the shark!"
I was gone... I left the business... I knew that
continuing on this path would NOT deliver me the
ROI I needed in my life! It would not give
me joy.
What about you? Are you in a particular field
or career that you feel stuck in... that's NOT
moving forward...
So ask yourself: Have you JUMPED the shark
with your career?
Hit a dead end street and hoping things will change
around?
If so, what are you going to do about it?
But importantly, are you ready to make a change
and when?
You know what? I think you know the answer!
Next up, I will discuss how your career is like a marriage!
